Thanks to Meduza, I at some point decided to "dig into" the story of my repressed great-grandfather. Everything worked out (who would have thought what that was like: they explained to me the intricacies of searching in the MVD archive, they treated me respectfully at the prosecutor's office) - and I will never forget how happy my grandfather was to receive a very thick folder - 300+ pages of the arrested person's personal file. With photographs, protocols of night interrogations, redacted names of NKVD officers - and the enormous story of a beloved father and a separated family. And in the end - a certificate recognizing my great-grandfather as a victim of repression already in 1989. My grandfather turned 94 then, he last saw his father at 24.
